Documentation / ProMon

From a fresh VM
to your first dashboard.

Start with one connection. Host agents, alerts, directory login, and backups can follow.

Public downloads are being prepared.

This guide explains the current installation workflow. Run the installation steps only after you have a reviewed release delivered through a trusted publisher channel.

1. Prepare a dedicated VM

The recommended starting point in the ProMon first-run guide is:

  • Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS
  • 2 virtual CPUs
  • 2–4 GB RAM
  • 40 GB disk
  • OpenSSH enabled and an address your workstation can reach

Install ProMon inside a dedicated VM, rather than on your Proxmox hypervisor. The VM needs access to package repositories and the equipment you want to monitor. The installer handles PostgreSQL and the application services.

Use a fresh VM. The installer refuses existing application and database paths to avoid overwriting another installation.

2. Install the release

Copy the reviewed ProMon-Setup-VERSION.run file to your Ubuntu VM. Replace VERSION with the version in the filename you received. Run this on the VM:

sudo sh ./ProMon-Setup-VERSION.run

For an optional payload verification or installation preflight:

sh ./ProMon-Setup-VERSION.run --verify-only
sudo sh ./ProMon-Setup-VERSION.run --preflight-only

Wait for the installation-complete message. Embedded checksums detect corruption; obtain the installer through a trusted channel to establish who published it.

3. Open the protected first-run session

ProMon initially listens on the VM’s loopback interface. On your workstation, open a terminal and create an SSH tunnel:

ssh -N -o ExitOnForwardFailure=yes \
  -L 18080:127.0.0.1:8080 USER@SERVER

Replace USER with your Ubuntu username and SERVER with the VM address. Leave the terminal open, then visit http://127.0.0.1:18080 in your browser.

Create the first ProMon administrator and follow Guided setup. The Ubuntu account and the ProMon administrator are separate accounts. Configure trusted HTTPS before enabling access from other machines on your LAN.

4. Add one monitoring connection

In Connections, choose the first service you want to monitor. If your lab uses Proxmox, start there:

  1. Create a dedicated monitoring user and API token in Proxmox.
  2. Grant read-only PVEAuditor access at / with propagation. A privilege-separated token also needs its matching read-only ACL.
  3. Enter the hostname, port, token ID, and token secret in ProMon’s Proxmox connection form.
  4. Keep certificate verification enabled. Configure your trusted internal CA if your setup uses one.
  5. Save the connection and check that measurements appear.

Use each form’s Save button. Moving between guide steps does not save unsaved connection changes.

5. Build out your setup

  • Add your NAS, UniFi network, SNMP equipment, or NUT server.
  • Arrange dashboard cards and review measurement history.
  • Configure an alert and your preferred notification service.
  • Enroll optional host agents from Settings → Agents.
  • Configure backups and test recovery before depending on the installation.

The application’s Guided setup includes connection forms, health checks, and downloadable guides. You can return to it after the first run.
